Gilead UK and Ireland Communities Welcome to Gilead UK and Ireland communities At Gilead we are inspired by the opportunity to address unmet medical needs for patients living with life-threatening diseases around the world. Gilead’s team of researchers and collaborators creates innovative medicines that advance the treatment of serious medical conditions. But improving health requires more than scientific discovery. As Gilead grows as a company, so does its responsibility to patients and to communities. The Gilead UK and Ireland Community Grants Programme is developed to recognise the value of help and support delivered by organisations for patients in their communities. << BACK TO TOP SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY Our corporate giving programmes provide funding to UK and Ireland healthcare and charitable activities related to our core therapeutic areas. We are also proud to support non-healthcare related social service, science and education, and community programmes in UK and Ireland. COMMUNITY GRANTS PROGRAMME Gilead Sciences Ltd provides financial grants to individual patient organisations or groups of patient organisations (a registered charitable organisation or a recognised healthcare organisation where some funding comes from the NHS) in the UK and Ireland in the area of bloodborne viruses, notably HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C, and oncology to support core activities or project-specific activities. Our Community Grants Programme is administered in a manner that ensures transparency in process and compliance to the ABPI Code of Practice for the Pharmaceutical Industry whilst maximising the benefit for patients and the wider community. Gilead Sciences encourages allocation of funds through the Community Grants Programme. Applications received outside this formal process should be directed to Gilead Public Affairs, and will only be considered project-specific activities. For 2015, particular attention was given to applications that promoted or enabled the active involvement of patient groups or organisations in treatment, care or policy decisions. The Gilead community Grants Programme 2016 is now inviting applications. For 2016, there are two application forms available to download, one for funding a particular project and one for core funding for your organisations – this means funding which goes towards the core costs of running your organisation, including salaries, overheads and day-to-day running costs. Please read the guidance for applicants carefully and download an application form to make your application. Once your application is complete please return it to The closing date for all applications is Monday 11 April 2015. After this date applications will not be reviewed or considered as part of the process. If you have any questions or require advice on the suitability of your proposal, please email us. Thank you and good luck with your application. FEATURED COMMUNITY SUPPORTED PROJECTS Africa Advocacy Foundation Body and Soul Africa Advocacy Foundation Africa Advocacy Foundation (AAF) is a volunteer-run community organisation that was founded in 1996 to advance the health and wellbeing, education and social inclusion of mainly Africans living in the UK. The organisation works to empower disadvantaged and vulnerable individuals to realise their potential, access opportunities and make informed choices in life. The AAF’s activities include HIV prevention and peer support, mental health services, female genital mutilation campaigns, as well as services for the young and the elderly. In 2014 AAF received a Gilead Community Grant award of £9,366 to train 20 HIV positive advocates. Advocacy Plus is a beneficiary-led programme that aims to empower 20 people living HIV in South London with the necessary skills, knowledge and motivation to effectively manage their HIV conditions, become mentors and actively champion for better HIV services. The programme delivers structured, accredited advocacy training and practical opportunities for the trainees to share their journeys and experiences as HIV patients as well as actively participate in local HIV forums, health policy debates, consultations and in the planning and delivery of HIV services. The Africa Advocacy Foundation runs two HIV support groups in South London that see around 300 people living with HIV annually with approximately 40 people coming in each week. Through these groups it became apparent that African people living with HIV do not effectively engage with healthcare professionals nor utilise the excellent HIV resources available. African patients tend to experience multiple barriers and don’t usually participate in campaigns, consultations, policy discussions, networks or groups specific to HIV and other related health conditions. The Advocates Plus programme was initiated to address these barriers and to ensure that the needs and views of those living with HIV from the African community are represented at every level. The Gilead Communities grant has enabled the AAF to register the following successes and enabled the trainees to get involved in the following practical activities: Eleven advocates currently in the final stages of completing their course portfolios. Eight new advocates have been recruited and inducted into the programme. Three advocates participated in the BHIVA Autumn Conference in October 2014 and returned to share their learning and experiences with the rest of the peer support group. One person went to the recent Gilead HIV and Your Quality of Life conference in Athens, Greece. Five advocates wrote a submission to the Lambeth Sexual Health Strategy consultations to convey recommendations of patients regarding HIV peer support, treatment and testing services. Three advocates are currently being trained as community researchers on a project the AAF is delivering with University of Greenwich and Metro as a way of building community skills and capacity. One of the advocates was instrumental in the Positive Conversations programme and appeared in the film. Six advocates participated and carried out HIV testing in two churches during the national HIV testing week. Seven advocates led in organising two World Aids Day events in Brixton and Lewisham. Our advocates are being proposed as reps on The London HIV Audit & Outcomes Group and the HIV Drugs and Treatments groups next year. Denis Onyango a Development Manager from the Africa Advocacy Foundation said, “I would encourage anybody considering applying to go ahead especially as Gilead are open to new, innovative ideas.” Body & Soul’s Rosebery Avenue Centre. Reproduced with permission of Body & Soul Body and Soul Body & Soul, by receiving a Gilead Community Grant Award in 2013, has been able to further improve the lives of people of all ages affected by HIV, who are often described as some of the most vulnerable people in our society. Body & Soul is a charity which promotes the respect, dignity and wellbeing of children, teenagers, adults and families who are living with and closely affected by HIV. Their approach is grounded in responsive expert programming with the aim of maximising choices and pathways for achievement and continuous learning. Body & Soul is a safe place that supports everyday people to manage the everyday challenges that HIV sets before them and the people they love. Body & Soul recognises the isolation and stress that HIV can have on an individual’s mental health and has devised comprehensive, age-appropriate strategies to tackle this problem. After applying for a grant in March 2013, Body & Soul received £5000 for its one-to-one and group support addressing the mental health and emotional wellbeing of teenagers and adults attending its London centre. Workshops, alongside one-to-one counselling, provide support for individuals who are exceptionally vulnerable. One such workshop focused on “Moments of Success”, encouraging participants to focus on past successes, unpicking what that means and building on this to encourage future success. Support at this level can be a launchpad to other activities available at the centre. Key to the success of the workshops is both the ability to reimburse participants’ travel expenses and provide a hot meal as part of each weekly session. Eating a meal in a group breaks down barriers of anxiety, stigma related to HIV, and feelings of isolation. Isaac*, one of the centre’s users, said, “If there was no Body & Soul, life would be very hard and lonely. When we meet each week, we see life in a different angle. We talk, we laugh and we hope.” Caer Smyth from Body & Soul said, “Gilead’s Community Grant Award has provided the opportunity for Body & Soul to develop and expand its award-winning support for some of society’s most vulnerable members. The particular focus on mental health is vital and extremely impactful, as good mental health and wellbeing is paramount when living with any health condition. The application process was straightforward and the decision was made swiftly. Thanks to the grant from Gilead we have been able to provide our members with the support they need at their own pace, in their own way.” *Name has been changed to protect identity << BACK TO TOP REGISTER FOR GILEAD COMMUNITIES UPDATES CLICK HERE << BACK TO TOP REGISTER FOR GILEAD COMMUNITIES UPDATES CLICK HERE Click here for archived community supported projects Apply for an Ad Hoc grant!
